Bringing Traditional Chinese Ink Drawing into VR

Storyboard Plans

We’re thinking of crafting three panels, each styled in traditional Chinese ink drawing, which feels both authentic and immersive.

  1. First Panel – The Northern Mountains: This panel will capture the mystical aura of China’s northern mountains. We plan to use ink wash techniques to show off the rugged landscapes and the ancient secrets they hold. This should set a really mysterious and intriguing tone for the game.
  2. Second Panel – The Guardian Yeti and the Five Sacred Beasts: Here, we’ll depict a yeti guarding the relics of the five sacred beasts at the summit of the mountain. The idea is to illustrate the yeti in a solemn way, surrounded by the almost ghostly figures of the sacred beasts, drawn with vibrant, flowing strokes that really pop.
  3. Third Panel – The Player’s Purpose: This one’s still a bit up in the air, but we’ll use it to show the player’s role. As the young village chief, the player will have to make tough choices about who gets to survive under the protective shield due to severe weather extremes. We’re thinking of using sharp ink contrasts to draw attention to the harsh realities the player faces.

Background Story(basic)

The world’s in pretty bad shape with extreme weather getting worse. Only the wealthy or lucky ones can access a protective shield that controls the climate for human survival. In our game, the village chief has only one quota for his whole village and has to decide who gets to use it. This brings a real human touch to our narrative, showing how tough choices affect real lives.

Why Ink Drawing?

Using traditional ink drawing isn’t just about sticking to cultural roots; it’s also about deepening the emotional connection. We want each stroke and shade to reflect the deep ties between man, myth, and nature, aligning perfectly with our themes of survival and responsibility.

What’s Next

We’ve got our work cut out for us as we develop these panels and mesh them with the voice-over. The goal is to make something that isn’t just fun but also makes players think about bigger issues like leadership and moral dilemmas. We can’t wait to fine-tune our ideas and turn these concepts into a reality in our VR world. Keep an eye out for more updates as we push through this creative adventure!
