Navigating Design Decisions in Our Interactive VR

NarrativeRefining the Narrative Structure

Our team has been deeply engaged in discussions about the design and direction of our interactive VR game. As we refine the narrative, the focus has been on how player decisions impact the story, particularly concerning interactions with various animal characters.

Key Design Decisions Discussed:
Cutscene Implementation: Carlos suggested that we should limit ourselves to creating five essential cutscenes that illustrate the beginning and end of our story, ensuring that we focus on quality and narrative impact.

Decision-Making Mechanics: We debated the consequences of ignoring characters like the fox. Initially, the idea was that ignoring the animals could lead to severe consequences such as characters being eaten by a mythical yeti or being shamed back to the village. However, Minfan pointed out that in the initial settings, there was no option to ignore the animals, suggesting a design where ignoring critical decisions leads to automatic negative outcomes to maintain narrative integrity.

Game Over Mechanics: A significant point of discussion was whether the game should end if players ignore the fox at the beginning. Carlos felt this could be a definitive end, but Yixian raised concerns that this might limit player engagement and reduce the dynamic nature of our game.

Village Scene Necessity: As we discussed the consequences of player actions, the idea of incorporating a village scene became essential. This would serve as a grounding point for the narrative, providing context and consequences for the players’ decisions.

Animal Character Design: The team also discussed the aesthetic direction for the animal characters. Yixian suggested that since the animals represent gods, they should have a more magical appearance, enhancing the mystical element of our narrative. This led to a decision to possibly adjust our visual approach to include high-quality, magical-realism models that better fit the setting.

Collecting Player Feedback: To ensure our design choices resonate with our audience, we plan to integrate questions about visual preferences and character design into our upcoming questionnaires. This will help us gather valuable feedback and adjust our designs to meet player expectations.

Looking Ahead
As we move forward, our primary focus will be on ensuring that every element of the game—from the storyline to the visual aesthetics—aligns with our vision of creating an engaging and beautiful VR experience. We’re committed to incorporating player feedback into our design process, making adjustments based on what we learn from our audience. The next steps involve finalizing our questionnaire to gather broader input and beginning the asset acquisition phase for necessary graphical elements.
