In the character design process, transforming inspiration into a unique character image is a creative journey from reference to originality. Here are some key steps and ideas that helped me develop the initial inspiration into a unique character in Moonbow:

- Finding the source of inspiration
Cultural elements: The initial inspiration came from traditional Chinese culture, especially desserts and wedding customs. For example, moon cakes, rainbow ice cream, etc. are traditional desserts with symbolic meanings. These cultural symbols have deep emotional connotations and are suitable for reflecting the identity and emotional state of the characters.
Modern popularity: I also refer to modern cartoon-style character designs, such as the works of animation studios such as Disney and Pixar. These characters usually have soft shapes, bright colors and rich expressions, which are very suitable for conveying complex but warm emotions. - Deconstruction and understanding of inspiration
When referring to these inspirations, I will not copy them directly, but deconstruct the logic behind these designs. For example, moon cakes are a traditional food that symbolizes reunion and family. I redefine its image to make the character “Mom” both traditional and serious.
Rainbow ice cream, as a symbol of youth and freedom, inspired me to design Mei Lin’s image, making her character vibrant and colorful, thus representing diversity and individual freedom. - Conceptualization and Exploration
Sketch and Iteration: I explored various possible shapes through a lot of sketches. For example, when designing the groom Xiao Zhang, I tried many different pastry shapes and finally chose “green bean cake”, which has a traditional appearance, but by adding a crack on the shoulder, it hints at the character’s inner struggle and hidden secrets.
Shape Language: Shape language is very important in character design. For example, I used circles and soft lines to show Ellie’s fragility and tenderness, and used more edges and layers to show the authority and traditionality of the mother’s character. - Give the Character Personality
Color and Texture: The choice of color is crucial to the character’s personality. Mei Lin’s rainbow color symbolizes her diverse identity, while the traditional mooncake color and texture of her mother emphasizes her adherence to culture.
Detailed characters: Each character has some unique details to reflect their identity and personality, such as the decoration on Ellie’s head and the soft expression, which reflects her inner struggle and emotional changes; Mei Lin’s ice cream has rich ingredients on the top, representing her colorful and unrestrained personality. - Integration with the plot
Each character is designed to better serve the plot. For example, Ellie’s character undergoes a psychological transformation, which is also reflected in her dessert image – from a simple dessert shape to gradually being reorganized and pieced together, symbolizing her process from chaos to self-identity.
Contrast and conflict: I also created contrast and conflict between the characters, such as Mei Lin’s rainbow color represents freedom, while her mother’s traditional mooncake represents restraint. Such opposition helps to promote emotional conflicts and plot development between characters in the story. - Summary and originality
Transforming inspiration into a unique character design is not a simple copy, but through deconstruction, recombination and personal understanding of the original inspiration. The final characters not only have the shadow of the original culture and modern popularity, but more importantly, they have unique personalities and visual symbols that serve the story.
Through these steps, I successfully transformed my inspiration into unique characters belonging to the world of Moonbow. The design of each character fully reflects their personality, emotions and the role they play in the whole story. These characters are not only visually present, but also communicate emotionally with players through their appearance and symbolic language.
